At first glance, you might think this is only a big, beautiful black and white album. If you look closely, you will discover that each illustration is made up of tiny ants drawn with Indian ink! Hundreds, thousands of ants that, perfectly arranged, manage to compose portraits, scenes of the Wild West, monuments... The result is beautiful, fascinating. This accumulation of ants even creates a vibration that gives the impression of seeing the image move! Beyond the graphic prowess (2 years of work, 12 ants per cm²), Cyril Houplain offers us a great adventure story, the story of Allistair Burke, a young Londoner, embarked as a moss to discover America at the time of the conquest of the West. After many adventures, his encounter with four Apaches, very hostile to white settlers, will be as perilous as it is decisive: Allistair becomes an ant tamer. But the real heroine of the story is little queen Pépite, the only red ant in the album! The author's ambition is to speak in a different way about migrations and, by choosing ants, to make children think about time and community. This is a masterpiece!
