The Yellow Elephant is a wordless comic intended for the youngest audience – in front of the child, (silent) scenes unfold, which they follow, possibly even as a storyteller, thus becoming a vocal co-creator of the story. The only words that appear in The Yellow Elephant, besides the main title, are the titles of individual episodes, which capture moments from the everyday life of three friends: the yellow elephant – whose unexpected color alone calls for imaginative responses, a frog, and a bird. At the center of every episode is the relationship between them, so it is no surprise that Suzi Bricelj’s illustrations place great emphasis on the characters’ (very expressive) facial expressions and body language, while the setting is, in most cases, less important. There is no lack of delightful inventions either – in the episode Basketball, for example, the elephant simply cannot manage to score until he realizes he can play using his trunk. Above all, every episode is full of childlike spirit, mischief, and spontaneity, which are undoubtedly very close to the readers/viewers of this comic. The Yellow Elephant is therefore an excellent book for a first entry into the world of comics. It is also a fine combination of playful content and a very serious message – friendship is what counts: in books, beside books, and beyond them.
