Tales

Seven-year-old Emily lives in a big old house. Up in the attic the girl discovers an old cupboard full of clothes no longer worn and items no longer used. Dresses, blouses, umbrellas, overcoats, handbags, bus tickets and other things, as well as the cupboard itself, begin telling stories. By using anthropomorphized things the writer subtly describes the family history, while at the same time emphasizes certain moral values and discusses existential questions. The idea that old things used to have and still have an important role in our lives is especially interesting in this literary fairy tale. Emily convinces her mother to wear the forgotten black dress at the wedding of her aunt Violeta and her father to take the old umbrella with him and put the grandfather's overcoat. Thus, the girl brightens the daily lives of the things. Even though the setting of the tale is quite narrow, the narrative is dynamic and often comic.
