Meet Yoko, an ordinary ten year old school girl living in an ordinary apartment building in Helsinki! In her diary, Yoko writes about intricacies at school and struggles with friendship and first love, and not least about her somewhat extraordinary family consisting of her parents, her younger siblings Frida and Salvador and her grandfather. Yoko’s father is a kind-hearted but fairly withdrawn psychologist, while her mother is a hot-blooded artist, who has named her children after artists she admires. Yoko writes her diary at night and like most diaries it is top secret! The diary is outspoken, entertaining, and full of embarrassments and awkward situations – surprisingly often caused by Yoko´s mother. Yoko herself is a clear-eyed, fair, and perceptive narrator treating her environment with warmth and sincerity. The Nightbook is the first book of three so far in the award-winning middle grade series of Yoko’s diaries written by Annika Sandelin and illustrated with plain and accurate drawings by Linda Bondestam.
